The Confused Rooster of Jaco

I can smell the eggs and now hear Coco.  My eyes dart to the alarm clock.  It is only 4:27 am.  Dang, I could have laid in bed for at least another hour.  Slowly I raise my hands above my head and take a deep breath.  Here it goes, another day.  Not sure if it is Monday or Tuesday.  Ugh.  Oh well.  Normally I have time to just sit and think about it for an hour.  Not today!

I swing my legs off the bed till my toes touch the ground.  Do I want to go to the kitchen?  I sit for a moment then scratch my brain.  Almost as if that is going to help me make my decision.  Am I the only person that talks to themselves? Yep, I am hungry, going to see what the heck is going on.

Good morning sunshine.  My dad says as I arrive at the kitchen table.  Wow dad, how long have you been at it.  Well, I couldn’t sleep.  So, I decided to make breakfast.  I didn’t mean to wake you, if I did.  But we both know how you are; you wake at 4 anyhow.  Just like clockwork too.  My alarm clock.

Dad brings over my favorite, a sunny side up egg over Gallo Pinto, and a slab of avocado.  The caramelized sweet plantains, from what I remember was mom’s favorite with papa’s special corn tortillas.  Oh yeah, he even has pineapple and mango, my favorites.

Most of the food we have is from the trade of our eggs, I am thankful.  Let’s see, I have 4 more things to think of that I am thankful for before I eat.  I am thankful for Coco being as confused as me.  I am thankful for my dad making breakfast.  I am thankful for a good night’s rest.  I am thankful it is not MONDAY!!!!  It is Friday, yeah!!!

You picked your 5 things already, didn’t you?  Dad asks as he sits down to join me at the table.  How in the heck did he know I think to myself as I scratch my brain again.  How do I know?  Because you are my daughter.  How did you know what I was thinking? I finally said out loud.  Dad just smiles then says, eat Mija, it is going to get cold.

Dad, why do you think Coco is crowing at 4:27, 4:29, 4:30?  Well, you should ask him why, not me.  Then he laughs.  Not funny dad.  I honestly wasn’t joking.  If you want to know, you have to study it to figure it out.  There is a lot to learn from Coco, I am sure of it.

Again, more riddles from dad.  I scratch my brain AGAIN.  Then begin to eat.  Well Coco is an odd one.  I just hope the neighbors live with it.  The lady in the restaurant was complaining about “a rooster” crowing at odd hours in the morning.  Coco seems to be pretty consistent with his crowing, but it never seems to have anything to do with the sun coming up, I laugh.  Then I noticed, papa has mom’s favorite flowers, dishes, and tablecloth out.

Coco

Lots to do so I quickly clean all the food from my bowl and lick it to make sure I get every morsel.  Oh my, Alba, did you even taste your food?  Sorry papa, I was thinking about Coco.  I want to ask him why he crows so early.  Like clockwork.  Well, Coco is like you!  Go, feed the chickens.  I will finish clearing the table and do the dishes.  Also, don’t forget, in honor of your mama, we are having a special dinner, which did you remember that Coco hatched the same day as your mother’s birthday?  I scratch my brain.  Oh, that is why he has all of mom’s stuff out.  I should have known.  Of course I remembered, papa.  Do you think I am confused like Coco?  Then I laugh and sprint out the door.

Words: What are they good for anyway?

“Single” doesn’t mean a heart is available and free. Married doesn’t mean a heart is not available and trapped.” -Stacey Cook   (Added one of my scarlet macaw Costa Rica pictures for fun.  He had no mate in sight, "Single" and hanging out with me.  The safety guy says, "They are not that friendly.  Plus, I don't see his mate.".  Therefore, the conclusion, he must have been bitten by a snake and was dying.  Maybe the last hours of his life, all because he was "Single".) Why in the h-e-double hockey sticks would I say, “Words, what are they good for anyway”? I will explain. Words are just that, words. What gives them meaning are the attachments such as beliefs, culture, emotions, experiences, commitment, behavior, and character to name a few. For example, “Single” might mean “I am not married,” simple as that.  For others, it might mean, “I am available to have fun”.  I will let you guess what kind of fun I mean. Words are used to he...

Know Thyself - Γνῶθι Σ'αυτόν, gnōthi sauton

Know thyself, written in ancient Greek (Γν ῶ θι Σ'αυτόν, gnōthi seauton - Delphi maxim) happens to be my Facebook bio tagline and not by accident. The ancient Greek version of this beautiful philosophical maxim is on the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greece and is traditionally attributed to the Seven Sages of Greece (legendary group of philosophers, mostly Chilon) or Apollo himself. (Retrieved July 14, 2025 from  Knowthyself - Wikipedia ). Gnōthi seauton serves as a reminder to seek self-knowledge before deciding (Plato). Interpretations changed over the years, but really the interpretation you have is what matters.  My interpretation is parallel to the later writings that imply "knowing theyself" is the study of the universe to better understand one's soul. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the Temple of Apollo while in Greece, but we did get to visit Delos. How ironic that one of my favorite excursions was our journey to Delos Island in G...
